Our media begins with an action sequence of trains from different angles and ways, the shots are speeded up and put together in a sequence. I think this immediately makes people start asking questions about what is going on. Train noises are loud and the music starts with strong long lasting beats. I think this music creates suspense and will make the audience weary of what is about to happen. In between some of the train shots there are quick flashes of a word or picture from the notice board you later see in more detail. I think the quick images are unexpected and are references to what will happen later in the film which I think it will prepare the audience for a murder or killer. The images also have an effect on which I think makes them more distorted and mysterious.
The music then has a sudden beat and dramatic stop where the main character- Rose introduced by her walking in the train station. She also has effects on her walking which again make her mysterious and ghost like. I think this relates to codes and conventions of a thriller, as well as the weather being dismal and a dark day. The setting is eerie because nobody else is around and all the trees are dead and station is grey. She looks vulnerable because she is walking on her own and keeps turning around as if someone is there. The mese-en-scene is purposely made to look as if someone is there watching or following her too. The shots are through trees or from directly from behind as if it is someone walking and watching her from behind. The music continues to build and gets more and more intense, this is to get the audience on the edge of their seats wanting to know what is going to happen next.
Rose is also dressed in dark clothes, her coat hides the rest of her clothes which I think is suspicious, she is tall and has blonde hair. I think her skin tone being pale makes her fit into the surroundings and her age relates to the target audience. She continues walking up the stairs where we see her face and see a bird’s eye shot of her walking up them. I think this shot adds to the strange atmosphere and makes the walking sequence more exciting. She then reaches the end of the road and we see a long shot of her walking away. The music is still building and has sudden beats again which is made to make the audience think something is going to happen to her because if she was normally walking down the street suspense wouldn’t need to be built.
The visual then changes to a close up of what looks to be a handmade notice board/collage of various things such as women’s faces crossed out with red pen and certain word that stick out such as ‘psycho’. The shot follows a gloved hand that we assume to be a killers crossing out with red lipstick. I think this image is confusing for the audience and at first they will not understand what it is. This is the effect we wanted to have so the audience will be hooked and want to continue watching.
When the music is almost at its climax, the train sequence is repeated again and speeded up. It brings back the action part of the start to our thriller and is quite an ambiguous scene. It could be the character looking back, thinking about the trains or just be a mirrored effect around the character because it started with them and ends with them. The music then reaches a sudden stop and the background goes to black where the title is in white distorted font. It emphasis on the title of the film because the background noise is silent. We chose this font because it looks scratched into and scary, it looks as if the killer could have drawn it himself. The titles then continue in the same font in different positions on a black screen. This colour scheme realates to the codes of a thriller and the small parts of red add to the effect. Pictures are repeated from the train sequence to give the viewer a longer look and make them think back to what it is.
